Meet Cate & Doug

About Cate and Doug

Thank you for taking the time to learn about our family during what we are sure is a very difficult time for you. We deeply admire and respect your decision to consider adoption, and hope this will provide you with information that will show you that our home would be a perfect one for your baby. Our choice to adopt is a little different than others you may read. We have made a decision to pursue adoption to grow our current family. We very much love being parents to our two children, Ashton, who is 6 and Grace, who is 4–both of whom are also adopted. Our experience has been so wonderful and positive that we both came to the decision that adoption was a wonderful way to complete our family. Read below to learn more about our lives together.

We grew up less than a mile away from each other in Pittsburgh, and attended the same high school.  We had many mutual friends—but it wasn’t until several years after we graduated that we ran into each other at a local event and have been together for 10 years, and married for 6 years.  We have settled into a wonderful life full of laughter, learning and family.  We found our best friends in each other, and love building a home for our children that affirms their identities and backgrounds, while giving them space to be the individuals they are.

Cate was born and raised in Pittsburgh.  After high school, I attended Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland and then went on to Washington, D.C. where I was a teacher, before graduate school at NYU and CMU.  I have dedicated my life to education and improving the lives of children through my work as a teacher and school district administrator, and now as a VP at an education nonprofit.   I love to spend time outdoors and spend lots of time taking our kids to the pool during the warm months of the year.  I also love to read, and spend time every night reading to both kids.  In addition to being an avid reader, I love to cook.  I make sure that our family eats tasty, healthy and nutritious meals.

Doug was born and raised in Pittsburgh and is a graduate of Duquesne University as well as Carnegie Mellon University where he did his masters- and works for the City of Pittsburgh. I am a huge history buff, and deeply value learning and education–something I am already instilling in Ashton and Grace. I believe I am caring, responsible, loving, patient, funny, and always look out for people around me. I love watching children’s shows and Steelers football with the kids, running around in the playground and reading books (many, many books!) I try to also let Cate sleep a little longer on the weekends since I don’t doesn’t mind getting up with the kids and hanging out in the family room. :-)

Ashton is 6, and Grace is 4. Both were locally adopted and both are African American. They are the lights of our lives. They are smart, funny, loving and kind. They both love to swim, and read. They can’t wait for another baby brother or sister. Both of our children attend a local private school that is known for a focus on rigorous academics, and character development. Both Ashton and Grace are flourishing there. We were both given the gift of being able to pursue our dreams and passions growing up with full support of our families–and we do the same for our children.

Although we went to the same high school at the same time, and had mutual friends, we never spoke in high school. It was only about a decade later than we met up at a local event and started dating. We were engaged in Italy about 3 years later, and have been married 6 years. We became parents to our son less than 3 months after our wedding, so our married lives have always been about raising a family, and that brings us great joy.

We each visit our parents many Sundays for dinner–and in addition to an older brother and sister, your baby will have 3 great grandparents, 4 grandparents and several great aunts and uncles within a 15 minute drive–and they can’t wait for their next grandchild and grandniece or nephew! Your baby will also have aunts and uncles in North Carolina, Washington DC and New York City–all excited for a visit from the a new addition to the family. Birthdays and holidays are full of warm hugs, great food, visits, laughter and lasting memories. We love to travel–and have family and friends all around the country–and love introducing Ashton and Grace to the sights, sounds and people of the US and the world–and we know they both can’t wait for another playmate on our travels. In the past years we have taken our children to Boston, New York, DC, Peru, the NJ beaches and Cape Cod to see our loved ones.

After adopting Ashton six years ago, we decided to buy an old, cozy home in a very diverse neighborhood in the City of Pittsburgh, with tons of space for your baby to grow and thrive and play with our son and daughter. There are many kids in the neighborhood and in the evenings they spend time together riding bikes and playing games. Our home is one full of books, music, art and laughter. Our family can walk to many playgrounds, cultural events in Oakland and friends’ homes, as well as Cate’s parents who live less than 2 miles away.
